Work Co-ops start January 2009
Commencing January 2009, the Digital Media Design program will release forty-three digital media specialists to the industry seeking a 16-week co-op work term, and we would like to give you the first opportunity to bridge a connection. If you foresee that your organization may expand its team in the near future, this is the perfect opportunity to meet a potential employee amongst our graduates.
One of the most frequently asked questions from last year's event was "Do students have to be paid for this co-op?" In short, the co-op can be either paid or unpaid. That being said, the more talented students from last year had several opportunities to choose from, so they will usually select a paid opportunity over an unpaid one. We expect that industry demand will be strong for this year's graduates as well.
Program Expansion
We're proud to announce that an expansion to our program was approved this past summer and we're now bigger and better.
- Our name is now the Digital Media Design program (used to be the Digital & Interactive Media Design program).
- We have increased our 1st year intake from 50 to 75 students.
- We have hired 2 new instructors (Jonathan Hill and Cheryl Dalmer).
- We have now appointed an Associate Chair (web instructor Phil Redmond) to assist Program Chair Peter Hansen.
- Created a new specialization course for the 2nd year students: Advanced Interactive Design taught by Daelan Wood.
- Will soon be introducing additional subject areas into our curriculum.
NAIT Digital & Interactive Media Design: 2-Year Diploma Program
This is the third cycle of graduates from our 2-year Diploma Program and we're very excited by the students' accomplishments. Perhaps the most successful aspect has been the 2nd year specializations that the students are now completing. The six specialization areas are:
- Advanced Web Design & Development: The 1st year concentrated on the client-side design skills of (X)HTML, CSS, Javascript, Dreamweaver, and interactive design theory. The Advanced course introduces server-side application development using PHP/MySQL.
- Advanced Interactive Design: Web design techniques are explored in greater depth. Open-source database and CMS packages like Wordpress are introduced.
- Advanced Flash Development: After a 1st year of Flash interface, media elements, and Actionscript, 2nd year Flash introduces MySQL database support , Flash video, and Actionscript 3.
- Video Studio: Video continues to stress shooting and editing, but now introduces High-Definition equipment and techniques, plus DVD authoring.
- 3D Animation: Advanced modeling and animation in Lightwave.
- Advanced Applied Graphic Design: Design theory is delivered in both digital & analog terms, plus design for print is continued at a high level.
Our program has been running since 1999, and we're very happy to see the success that many of our former students have had in the local media industry. Our students and staff are excited about this event, so come on down, see our work, chat with some colleagues, and have a cup of coffee. Many thanks and we hope to see you there.
